Sherman Lowe

Sherman Lowe: A Biography

Vocal pedagogue Sherman Lowe is one of the most sought-after experts in operatic singing in Europe. He was also one of my most influential mentors. The principles I learned during my time studying with him—particularly his foundational understanding of vocal support and registration—form a core part of the historically-informed, science-led vocal pedagogy I teach to my own students today.

Mr. Lowe's expertise is built on a lifetime of dedicated study and performance. A graduate of the prestigious University of North Carolina School of the Arts, he completed his formal education at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg. After moving to New York City, he studied with some of the city's most respected teachers, including Daniel Ferro, Armen Boyajian, and Shirlee Emmons. He later continued his development as a bass-baritone in Europe under the guidance of legendary artists such as Hans Hotter, Walter Berry, and Simon Estes.

As a performer, Mr. Lowe won major competitions in both the United States and Europe. He sang in numerous theatres and concert halls across North America and Europe, working with many of the most noted conductors and singers of his time. This deep practical experience on the stage informs every aspect of his teaching.

A dedicated scholar of vocal research, Mr. Lowe was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Foundation grant in 1993 and 1994 to further his pedagogical work in Italy. This marked his transition from a successful performer to a world-renowned teacher.
