Alya Marquardt, Soprano
Alya Marquardt is a singer, song-writer and pianist.
Originally from Iraq and brought up in Tottenham, London, her music is infused with influences from Iraqi folk song to jazz, hip hop and electronica.
Her musical development began at a young age when she took up the piano thanks to the generosity of her school teacher, Linda Phillips, and began singing in choirs before becoming a soloist.
Previously, Alya trained as a mezzo-soprano with the former lead soprano at the Bolshoi opera in Moscow.
In addition to classical performance, she performed for several years with the Alya Marquardt Quintet before forming a 10-piece ensemble called Shamash which has just recorded its debut album.
Her latest project, ALULA, incorporates jazz improvisation into Iraqi folk music.
